Types of Beneficial Oils

:: There are a lot of different kinds of oils out there and a lot of different types of fats. There are trans fats, partially hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and saturated fats. Oils are just fats in liquid form. Keeping everything straight in the world of fats and oils can be a challenge to say the least. But in the modern world, with so much available to us, it’s important to know what kinds of oils and fats are best for you to consume and to determine whether or not your diet should conatin some fats and oils over other oils.

There are many differences between the different kinds of fats and oils, differences in nutrition, cooking value, and effects on cholesterol and blood pressure. Some oils are very nutritious and yet bad for cooking because of their low smoke point and tendency toward heat damage. Other oils are great for cooking but aren’t very nutritious for the body. In the last couple of decades, there have been many mistruths proclaimed about fats and oils, and many products such as margarine, which have purported to be heathly, have been widely used and have at least partially caused a rise in chronic conditions such as heart disease.

Most oils that you’ll hear about these days contain a variety of Omega essential fatty acids. Most people have heard of Omega essential fatty acids but aren’t quite sure what they are. Omega essential fatty acids are composed of three different types, Omega 3s, Omega 6s, and Omega 9s. All three are very valuable to the body and the difference between them has to do with where the double bond between 2 carbon atoms within the molecule first takes place. In Omega 3s, the first double bond takes place at the 3rd carbon molecule, Omega 6′s first double bond takes place at the 6th carbon molecule, and so forth. These 3 types of Omega essential fatty acids are all polyunsaturated fats and are used heavily by the body. Every cell in the body has a membrane surrounding it that’s composed primarily of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and Omega 6s and 9s have function in a wide variety of different bodily functions.

In the past, the reputation of these oils has been tarnished by oil distributors promoting “lowfat” oils. But in recent years, many studies have shown that oils high in polyunsaturated fats, instead of contributing negatively to things like cholesterol, heart disease, and blood pressure, actually have been shown to have positive effects. There are a number of different reasons for this, but one main reason is that these oils help to raise the HDL cholesterol, also knows as good cholesterol, while simultaneously lowering LDL, or bad cholesterol. So even though the overall effect of some of these oils might be an elevated level of cholesterol, high HDL and low LDL is generally seen as a healthy state. HDL is very beneficial to the body and can actually help the body remove harmful plaque and buildup from arterial walls. Simply lowering total levels of cholesterol like many medications do is now coming under some sharp criticism.

Go Electric with the Elettrica

The Elettrica is a comfortable all electric car. It’s 2-seater and it can take you round town at 40 mph and it can travel a distance of 65 miles on a full five-hour charge. It also has enough space in the boot to accommodate a lot of shopping or luggage and is comfortable inside thanks to good legroom, headroom, leather seats and a glass roof.

And of course, it’s got the looks. The Elettrica is the result of a getting together of car technology from the UK, Italy and Japan. It has been designed and built in Italy with electrics designed by the British.

It’s the kind of car you look at and think: Ah here is the car that was designed for the future! It’s got the style and it is compact, with no emissions and you can tell it’s been designed in a city like Milan, with its stylish double bow design. It has been designed for the best road visibility and has a tinted glass roof.

The inside is ergonomically designed and is spacious enough for seating to be comfortable and yet compact enough to be a small car. The safety aspect has been kept in mind with powerful brakes, an advanced aluminum safety cage, disc brakes, front and rear impact bars and the side as well as the front having been crash-tested.

The carbon dioxide emissions are nil, it is a zenn car, zero emissions no noise, and the transmission is automatic so there is no tension about changing the gears or using the clutch on crowded city roads. There is hardly any road or tire noise too.

The Elettrica comes in two versions: the Lithium battery version and the Lead battery version. The cars with the lithium battery have a 70 mile range with a 45 mph top speed while the ones with the lead battery have a 40 mile range with a top speed of 40 mph.

With just one charge, the Elettrica can go further than most other electric cars. In fact, in July, the car made it in one single charge from London to Brighton which is around 50 miles and there was power to spare.

Considering that this stretch is not flat and is outside the city driving augues well for the Elettrica. The lithium battery takes around 6 hours to charge while the lead battery can be charged in 8 hours. A full charge costs anything from 30 to 50 p in the UK.

The great thing is that the car can be charged for a few minutes or a few hours – it doesn’t matter. The on-the-road price in the UK is expected to be around ?12,750 for the lithium version and ?9,950 for the lead version. It is available in a choice of colors – black, white, red, silver, yellow and blue.

Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 427 - Road Test - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver

Originally published in Car and Driver magazine in November 1965.

Son of a Gun — just what the needed, more power! Chevrolet has replaced last year’s top-of-the-line 396-cu. in. engine with a 427. According to the factory, horsepower remains unchanged at 425, but torque has gone up from 415 lbs/ft. at 4000, to 465 at the same rpm. We asked one Chevrolet man why the increase in displacement and torque didn’t have a parallel increase in horsepower. "This was done primarily to save weight," he said, with a twinkling eye; "you must remember that cast-iron is very heavy, and by removing thirty cubic inches of it, we have made a significant reduction in weight."

Last year’s 396 "porcupine head" Corvette was cranking out quite a bit more than its advertised 425 bhp, and with 427 cu. in., the gap between advertised and actual becomes even broader. However, Chevrolet insists that there are only 425 horses in there, and we’ll just have to take their word for it. Though we feel compelled to point out that these are 425 horses of a size and strength never before seen by man — horses as tall as houses, with hooves as big as bushel baskets. When you have

this many of those horses exerting their full force against the small of your back, you are profoundly impressed, and you will most likely lose all interest in counting anyway.

Last month we said that the most dominant feature of any Ferrari was its engine. Well the same thing is true of this big 427 Sting Ray, except that we’d go one step farther and say that it’s the

power , more than the engine, that overwhelms every other sensation. There’s power literally everywhere, great gobs of steam-locomotive, earth-moving torque. And because the Corvette is a relatively small object, and considerably lighter than the other

that are fitted with such engines, there’s a direct, one-to-one relationship between the amount of throttle opening and the physical and emotional sensations the driver feels.

Other Corvettes, either the current models with 327 cu. in. engines, or the older ones with the original 283, had a more "European feel." They were very powerful, but they had a zippy, high-winding, no-flywheel feel to them that’s missing from the big 427. According to

, Chevrolet’s Corvette specialist from the very beginning, this difference in sensation is directly related to the comparative torque curves of the two engines. The hottest version of the 327, the 375-bhp fuel-injection engine, produced 350 lbs/ft of torque at 4600 rpm. The new 427 produces 465 lbs/ft at 4000 rpm. As you can see, the 327′s

rate of acceleration was still increasing after the 427′s torque curve had dropped off. Thus, even though the 427 is delivering more torque and more acceleration, its earlier torque peak results in less

sensation of acceleration in the higher rpm ranges.

Except for compensatory suspension changes and a few other twists and improvements, the 427 Sting Ray is basically identical to any other Sting Ray. But the big jump in power that came with the jump from 327 to 427 makes those detail changes critical.
